Sporting Blue Valley Rec

SBV Rec

Sporting BV Rec is a parent-volunteer coached soccer program open to all players PreK-12th grade.

Players from across Kansas City, Johnson County, and the surrounding suburbs start here. They experience soccer for the first time, make friends, and decide whether the game is for them - all without pressure or expectations.

With the exception of our PreK teams, teams are originally formed by area schools.

PreK through 2nd grade plays in Sporting Blue Valley's in-house league, with all games at Sporting Blue Valley HQ: The Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex.

3rd grade through 12th grade plays through the Heartland Soccer Association League, competing against other clubs at fields across the KC metro.

SBV Rec is our largest program, with thousands of players and hundreds of volunteer coaches every Fall and Spring.

And it remains exactly what a Rec program should be: laid-back, affordable, and focused on one thing above all else, which is making sure kids have fun playing soccer!

Teams

How Teams Are Formed

We've been doing this for almost 50 years, so we know what works best to make sure all 4,000 players and thousands of families are happy with their team, schedule, etc.

Here's exactly how our placement process works — so you know what to expect from the moment you click "register."

1: Registration Opens

All players register through their Sporting Blue Valley Sprocket account. Make any specific requests in the "Special Requests / Comments" field.

2: Deadline Closes

After Dec 13 at 11:59pm, we begin building the teams. Everyone registered by then is in the primary placement pool.

3: Returning Players Placed

Our system places returning players back on their previous team — unless they've requested to transfer.

4: New Players Filled in, and Requests Honored

We fill open spots on existing teams with new players. Then, we review special requests and honor as many as possible.

Important for Returning Players

Register by Dec 13 to Keep Your Team Together.

Any player who registers for Spring 2027 between Nov 1 and Dec 13 is guaranteed placement on their team from the Fall 2026 season. Want to switch to a different team? Just note it in the "Special Request / Comments" field during registration.

Note: PreK players from Fall do not automatically carry over to the following Fall. Kindergarten teams are re-formed by school wherever possible, so new classmates can play together.

Uniforms for 3rd grade and up are organized by each team's coach, which gives teams the flexibility to personalize their kit.

Why the change to self-purchased uniforms?

For the last two years, costs have risen for SBV Rec. The cost of practice fields across the KC Metro, the cost of equipment kits for our coaches, the price of medals, referees, field rental, etc. Per hour, per field, costs have gone up almost $20/hr in the last two years. And when we run our sessions for an entire morning on the entire complex, those begin to add up.

To meet our coverage mark, we could have just raised the cost of the program to $150/season. But we wanted to keep the registration fee low, and turn this shift into a benefit for you, while still saving you money.

Which is why we decided to give our families the option to order their own uniform kit, with direct delivery to their door. We only require what's necessary - two Adidas jerseys - that can last for four seasons.

So instead of raising the price to $150, we're just requiring all players to purchase two jerseys for $23.50/each.

Since they last four seasons, this comes out to $11.75/season, or $5.88/jersey per season, if you play for four seasons.

So, if you use your uniform for the cycle, you are only paying $100 + $11.75 ($5.88 x2). Which is $111.75/season.

This is only $16 more than the past, and you get a higher-quality uniform.

This saves your family $34, and you get shipping directly to your door.

The only reason for the change is to continue to provide low-cost soccer for families in Kansas City. That is why we only require what is necessary, and made everything else optional.

The only required items are two custom SBV Adidas jerseys. Each jersey costs $23.50, or $11.75 per year. Scheduling Practices

Pre-K to 2nd grade: your head coach picks the team's practice place, night and time.

Practice locations will include schools and parks in Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, and Leawood. These locations offer families and coaches a convenient practice location.

You will NOT drive across the city for practice. We have enough players, teams, and school partnerships that we can find a location close to you. If, for some reason, your practice time doesn't work for you - let us know and we'll adjust.

Ages and formats

Ages & Formats

SBV Rec runs in two phases: first, an in-house league at Scheels OP for PreK through 2nd grade, second - Heartland Soccer League play for 3rd grade and up. Every grade level gets age-appropriate field sizes, game lengths, and team sizes - built on nearly 50 years of learning what works for young players. Teams are grouped by school wherever possible so your child plays with classmates and neighborhood friends.

3rd – 12th Grade · Heartland Soccer League

Starting in 3rd grade, SBV Rec teams play in the Heartland Soccer Association League — a league comprised of many area soccer clubs and the largest youth soccer league in the Midwest. Your player still gets the low-key, volunteer-coached Rec experience — with the added benefit of competing against teams from across the KC metro.

Teams continue to be built around schools and neighborhoods whenever possible. Coaches schedule practices at locations convenient to their players — area school district fields, area parks, and SBV HQ: Scheels OP Soccer Complex.

Uniforms for 3rd grade and up are organized by each team's coach, which gives teams the flexibility to personalize their kit.

Game locations vary: Heartland Soccer League games are played at fields across Johnson County and the KC metro. Each team is scheduled for eight games between early March and mid-May (Spring) or August through October (Fall).

Team trainer option: SBV Rec teams 3rd grade and older have the option for a member of SBV Pro Staff to run an additional practice each week. This is an additional fee, but bumps the practices to 2x/week.

A note on team size and waiting lists

To make sure every player gets real playing time, we cap teams by age group. Because we don't have a hard cap on program registration — but we do have a cap on team size — our waiting lists depend on other families registering, not on open slots. This is why registering early matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your question isn't covered below, text SBV Support at (816) 769-7183 or reach out directly — the SBV Rec team is listed at the bottom of the page.

Who coaches the SBV Rec program?

All coaching for SBV Rec is volunteer-based — typically a parent of a player on the team. This is intentional: it keeps costs low, it keeps the program laid-back, and it means your coach is often someone you already know from your player's school or neighborhood.

Every coach must complete SafeSport certification and pass a background check before stepping on the field. We also provide coaching education sessions tailored to each age group, so no coaching experience is required.

How do I know if my player's school has a team available?

We build teams around schools and neighborhoods whenever possible — but we don't have a "click for this school" feature in the registration system. Here's how it works in practice:

Often, a parent tells their friends they're coaching a team, and those friends sign up. That creates a majority "XYZ School" team organically. If you want to play with a specific coach, school, or group of friends, use the "Special Request / Comments" box during registration — we review every request and honor as many as we can.

What if the schedule doesn't work for our family?

Please reach out the moment schedules are released. The general structure is:

  • One practice Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday (4:00–6:00 PM start)
  • One (sometimes two) games on Saturday (8:00 AM–12:00 PM) or Sunday (12:30–5:00 PM)

We'll do our best to accommodate schedule conflicts, but because teams are grouped by school and coach availability, we can't always shift an individual player's schedule.

My child plays other sports. Can they still participate?

Absolutely — Sporting BV encourages multi-sport participation.

Our once-a-week practice structure is specifically designed to fit alongside other activities. We believe developing overall athleticism is important for young players, and playing multiple sports is one of the best ways for kids to stay engaged and make new friends.

My player has never played soccer. Is that okay?

Rec is built specifically for first-time players. No tryouts, no cuts, no prior experience required. The whole point of this program is to introduce kids to the game in a low-pressure environment where having fun comes first.

If your player has played before and wants more structure or professional coaching, check out Juniors Academy, which is the stepping stone between Rec and our competitive Premier program.

What does the $100 fee cover?

Your registration covers:

  • Eight scheduled games per season
  • One weekday practice per week
  • Field use at SCHEELS OP and other Heartland venues
  • Program administration and insurance
  • Referee fees where applicable
  • League fees for 3rd grade and up (Heartland Soccer Association)
  • Background checks and SafeSport certification for all coaches

Can my player be placed back on last season's team?

Yes — as long as you register between Nov 1 and Dec 13, returning players are guaranteed placement on their team from the previous season. If your player wants to transfer to a different team, just note it in the "Special Request / Comments" field during registration.

Note: PreK players from Fall do not automatically carry over to the following Fall. Kindergarten teams are re-formed by school wherever possible, so new classmates can play together.

Where are practices held?

Practice locations vary by team and are chosen by the team's coach. Locations include:

  • SCHEELS OP Soccer Complex (13700 Switzer Rd, Overland Park)
  • Area school district fields — often at your player's elementary or middle school
  • Area parks around Johnson County and the KC metro

Because we group teams by school, practices are often very close to — or at — the school your player attends.

Is Rec a pathway to more competitive soccer?

Absolutely. Sporting Blue Valley is structured as a clear development pathway: Rec > Juniors Academy > Premier. Many of our current Premier players, ECNL players, and MLS Next players started right here in Rec.

That said — Rec is a legitimate destination in itself. Plenty of families play Rec from PreK through high school because the experience is exactly what they want: fun, affordable, and built around school and friends. There's no pressure to "move up" unless you want to.

Refund policy

For the Spring season, refunds requested before February 1 will be granted minus a $25 Administrative Fee. On or after February 1, no refunds will be granted. (For the Fall season, the cutoff is August 1.) Refund checks can take up to 4 weeks to process.

There are no refunds of credit card fees or late fees. Any request for a refund must be in writing and emailed to Tom Mura at tmura@sportingbv.org.
